Why is this even more sad today than it was two weeks ago?
One reason would be that for years we've heard nothing but jokes and speculations about him, and there's finally been a break from that long enough to recall his spectacular career...and to remember that he was a human. He was also an example of how a childhood can put through the shredder, and he spent a lot of his adult life trying to sew himself back together.
In something along the lines of Willie Wonka, my mom checked her email late late last night and found tickets to his memorial. She and my aunt packed their bags in the middle of the night and traveled from Oklahoma to Los Angeles this morning. I hope they don't get trampled tomorrow. I hope it's a respectful event like it should be, and that everyone behaves.
